French Poitou Donkeys
The Poitou donkey is an incredible French breed of donkey! Also known as Baudet du Poitou, as baudet translates to “sire of mules”, they once had an important job. The breed is one of the largest and rarest donkey breeds and has a rich history of being used to produce magnificent large mules when bred with French draft horses which were used for agriculture. With its unique shaggy, corded coat and long ears, the Poitou donkey is truly a sight to behold. Although it nearly faced extinction after mechanization around World War II, passionate efforts are now underway to preserve this amazing and endangered breed!
At Twisted Pines Ranch, our family is absolutely thrilled to be part of the mission to preserve this extraordinary breed! We proudly own a breeding pair of Poitous and can't wait to expand our herd through dedicated breeding efforts. Michelin, our charming young jack, is a fully registered French Poitou, and his lovely mate, Hazel, is equally registered. She is unique to displaying the recessive gene in which she does not have the distinct white marking on her nose or around her eyes like almost every other Poitou. We are so excited about the future offspring from these two remarkable and rare animals!
